Every autopilot system requires a control unit to control the steering functions. For this, high-resolution, user-friendly autopilot controllers with displays that are installed on the control panel are available from a range of manufacturers. They can be controlled by pressing a button, turning a dial or using a touchscreen, as well as with a wireless remote control. A smart controller provides additional convenience: you can adjust the course from anywhere on board via radio and, if connected to your on-board network, monitor important instrument data such as speed or water depth. Modern autopilot operating devices communicate with the autopilot via NMEA 2000 and can be linked to other output devices. Settings and information are shared with a compatible chart plotter or multifunction display. Some manufacturers also offer their own transmission protocols for their onboard instruments.

Before you buy an autopilot control unit, you should be clear about what you want it to be able to do. The space on the control panel will probably be important, as will compatibility of the device with an existing autopilot control system. It is advisable to stick with one manufacturer's autopilot control panel. As far as functionality is concerned, there are virtually no limits to the possibilities today: State-of-the-art, backlit LED displays offer first-class image quality with low power consumption, characters and images can be displayed in a variety of vibrant colours and sharp contrast, vertical and horizontal viewing angles ensure clear visibility from all positions. Devices can often be installed in just a few steps.

Many of these devices can be easily connected to a network/NMEA2000 with a corresponding cable and thus connected to other output devices. For added convenience, the system can be supplemented with an autopilot remote control, which can be used to control the autopilot unit from anywhere on board. With a Smart Controller or a wireless remote control, you can monitor all important data even when you are not on deck and do not have the instruments in sight. Such a radio-controlled, fully functional remote control for autopilots is connected to the target device via a base station and, depending on the manufacturer, has a range of between ten and 30 metres.
